The Philistines

Programme

The Philistines deserve their place within biblical scholarship, as part of the landscape of the ancient Near East. This seminar will provide a forum for discussion of their history, religion, culture and interaction with Judah and Israel. The following fields and topics may be of interest.

Recent archaeological finds from Philistia;

The role played by Philistines in Iron Age in Palestine (history and archaeology);

Philistine epigraphy;

Philistine origins (currently a much-discussed topic);

Processes of acculturation and creolisation;

Biblical reaction(s) to the Philistines (literary profiles and topoi);
